Can I use my Swedish mobile plan permanently abroad?

Accepted Answer

No, EU regulations only apply to temporary stays in other EU/EEA countries. If you or your company relocates operations abroad, you'll need to arrange a local mobile subscription. Your Swedish mobile subscription isn't designed as a permanent solution for extended stays outside Sweden.

What qualifies as temporary stays?

If you consume more data or spend more time abroad than in Sweden during any four-month period, it's classified as permanent roaming or excessive use.

What happens then?

You'll be contacted and notified via SMS about excessive use. If you choose to continue, you'll be charged according to regulated rates (prices excluding VAT):

Calls: SEK 0.30/min
SMS: SEK 0.10/message
MMS: SEK 0.07/message
Data: SEK 0.07/MB

What is cost control and how can I increase it?

Accepted Answer

Cost Control for data abroad protects you from high data charges outside the EU/EEA. It sets a monthly spending limit for your data usage. The default limit is €50, as defined by EU regulation. You can increase the limit via SMS or in MyBusiness if you need more data, but the cost control cannot be turned off completely.

Once you reach your set limit, mobile data is blocked for the rest of the month. The limit resets automatically at the start of the next billing cycle, allowing you to use data up to your set amount again. You can also increase the limit when it is reached to continue using data before the reset.

Cost control applies to pay-per-MB data usage and daily data limits in the countries you visit. See the country-specific limits in our price list for data abroad.

Cost control does not apply to add-on services or extra data packages that you have purchased separately.

Changing your cost control limit is free. You can update it in MyBusiness or by sending an SMS:

We have a PBX system at our company – what applies when abroad?

With Smart Connect, Touchpoint, and Touchpoint Plus, calls within the EU/EEA are charged at Swedish mobile rates. Messaging and data work the same way as they do on a standard business subscription without a PBX solution.

With Office Extension, the rates that apply to calls outside the PBX within Sweden also apply to roaming calls within the EU/EEA. Messaging and data work the same way as they do on a standard business subscription without a PBX solution.

Calls to Sweden are charged at the same rates as domestic calls routed through Telia's mobile network. Calls within and between EU/EEA countries are charged at the same rates as domestic calls in Sweden routed through a mobile operator other than Telia.

What's included in the international packages?

Question 6

Data and/or calls abroad aren't working – what should I do?

If you're experiencing issues with data or calls while abroad, try these steps:

Start by restarting your phone.
Make sure data roaming is enabled. For instructions on how to activate data roaming, see our mobile phone guides.
Try manually selecting a different network operator in your phone's settings.
If possible, test your SIM card in another device to determine whether the issue is with your phone.

If the problem persists after trying these steps, we recommend contacting our customer service for further troubleshooting.

What happens if I run out of data abroad?

Accepted Answer

Data usage within the EU/EEA works the same as in Sweden, with a monthly limit of 100 GB. If you want to continue browsing after reaching 100 GB, you can do so at a variable rate. You’ll receive an SMS with instructions on how to continue.

Mobile broadband only works if your subscription includes roaming. The limit for mobile broadband is 20 GB per month. This means that subscriptions with higher data allowances can use up to 20 GB when roaming within the EU/EEA, while subscriptions with lower data allowances can use their full allowance. Once you reach the limit, you’ll receive an SMS with instructions on how to continue at a variable rate.

If you run out of data, some subscriptions can be topped up until you reach the limit. Once the 100 GB or 20 GB limit is reached, you can continue using data at a regulated rate of SEK 10 per GB.

Within the Nordic and Baltic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania) you can use your full data allowance.

For mobile broadband subscriptions purchased after June 15, 2017, data can only be used in Sweden (individual agreements may vary). Contact your designated service desk or our customer service to find out what applies to your subscription.

Question 8

I can't purchase international data with a bank card or Swish

Accepted Answer

Telia can't troubleshoot issues with purchasing extra data via Swish or bank card. You can try completing the purchase without being connected to Wi-Fi.

If you continue to experience issues, an authorized user at your company can add data directly through MyBusiness.

Go to the Manage tab.
Select the subscription you want to add extra data to by choosing it from the list or searching for the mobile number.
Click Buy data and select the amount.
Confirm your selection by clicking Buy more data.
Done!

The welcome SMS you received when entering the country also includes information on how to purchase data by texting 4466. In this case, the charge is added to the subscription and billed to your company.

Question 9

How does calling, texting and browsing work at sea?

Data roaming must be enabled to allow your device to connect to another network. Roaming restrictions can only be added to certain plans.

Roaming prices are partly governed by EU regulations, and outside Europe, foreign exchange rates also affect pricing. As a result, prices are adjusted periodically and may increase or decrease. Always check current rates for your destination before traveling. All prices are listed excluding VAT.

Pricing with other maritime operators

Outgoing calls: SEK 10**.
Incoming calls: SEK 28.
Send SMS: SEK 4.
Receive SMS: SEK 0.
Send MMS: SEK 8.
Receive MMS: SEK 8.
Data: Surf Abroad*.

On board, you can use 100 MB for SEK 269/day. The per-MB rate up to the daily cap is SEK 8/MB. To use more than 100 MB, you'll need to actively purchase additional data (100 MB for SEK 269).

How much does it cost to call Sweden from abroad?

Accepted Answer

Within the EU/EEA, there's no extra charge to call Sweden if you have a pay-as-you-go plan. The same terms apply as at home. Outside the EU/EEA, rates vary by country and any add-on packages you may have.

"No extra charge" means no additional cost beyond your standard rate. If you have a plan with unlimited calls, calls are included at no cost. If you have a pay-as-you-go plan, you're billed at your standard rate with no surcharge.

What is roaming?

Roaming means using a mobile network that isn't operated by your carrier. When you travel outside Sweden, your phone switches from your operator's network to another provider's network. Calls made from Sweden to a Swedish mobile abroad, or calls to mobile or landline numbers with foreign country codes, don't count as roaming.

Is calling within the EU free?

Accepted Answer

When calling a Swedish phone number (with a Swedish area code) from Sweden, the cost is the same regardless of whether the recipient is in Sweden or abroad. However, if the recipient is outside the EU/EEA, they may incur charges when answering the call.

If you call a number with a non-Swedish country code and the recipient is currently in Sweden, you'll be charged based on the country the number belongs to.

When you're in an EU/EEA country, calling Swedish numbers, local numbers in the country you're visiting, or numbers in other EU/EEA countries costs the same as calling from home. In other words, calling from one EU country to another is charged at the same rate as calling Swedish numbers.

For plans with pay-as-you-go rates

Calls, texts, and MMS from an EU/EEA country to Sweden or within/between EU/EEA countries are charged at the same pay-as-you-go rates as in Sweden. Premium services are not included.

"Same cost as at home" means no additional charges. If your plan includes unlimited calls, you can call at no cost. If you have a pay-as-you-go plan, there's no extra fee – you're simply charged the standard rate for a domestic call in Sweden.

Question 13

Can you browse without roaming?

Accepted Answer

If you have access to a Wi-Fi network, there's no need to activate data roaming. Simply connect to your preferred Wi-Fi network to browse online.

Question 14

Who pays for international calls?

Accepted Answer

If you call a foreign number from Sweden, or call from one country to another (excluding your home country and Sweden), the call will be charged as an international call.

Charges will appear on your next invoice or be deducted from your existing balance if you have a prepaid card. Any charges will be added to the next invoice for the organization or company that owns the subscription.

If the "Split Billing" add-on is active before charges are created, the invoice will be split and you'll pay for the international call privately. Check what applies in your case – the terms are outlined in your agreement.

Question 15

When should you turn off data roaming?

Accepted Answer

Turn off data roaming if you don't want your phone or device to connect to the mobile data network in the country you're visiting. Calls and texts will continue to work normally.

If you prefer to keep data roaming disabled, we recommend turning it off before traveling to countries outside the EU/EEA, as charges may apply even for passive usage in the country you're visiting.

What's the difference between mobile data and roaming?

Mobile data is used within Sweden for browsing the internet, making calls, and sending text messages. When you use your mobile phone abroad, it's called roaming. This requires us to partner with foreign carriers so you can continue using your phone. This use of other networks is what we call roaming (and it's free within the EU – you browse and call at the same rates as at home).

Question 17

I purchased a data package but it's not working, why?

Accepted Answer

There are several reasons why a data package may not activate. One common issue is that your cost control limit for roaming has been reached before you purchased or activated your data package. When you start using data in a country outside the EU/EEA without an international package, data charges are billed daily. However, there's a daily maximum for cost control. You may need to send an SMS to raise your cost control limit if you need mobile data to activate a purchased data package or continue browsing at the standard rate. Another possible reason is that you haven't activated a new subscription with a new SIM card before leaving Sweden. For a data package on a new subscription to work, you must activate the SIM card by connecting to a cell tower on the Swedish network before traveling to the country where you want to use data. If you're already abroad, swapping SIM cards may not be possible, as we can't guarantee you'll be able to connect to a Swedish cell tower for activation.
