This is advanced 5G

Advanced 5G is the next generation of mobile connectivity, where both the network core and radio access network are purpose-built for 5G – known as 5G SA (Standalone) – operating independently of legacy networks like 4G. With advanced 5G, critical functions such as communication, control, and positioning can be prioritized and secured. This enables different users (vehicles, sensors, or personnel) to operate on dedicated, customized network segments, known as "network slicing." The technology makes it possible to create secure, fast, and reliable connections, even in the field or in near real-time, addressing needs in areas like logistics, communications, emergency services, and military defense.

5G is driving the next phase of Sweden's digital transformation

With advanced 5G, Sweden is taking a major step toward a more efficient and secure digital infrastructure. Fast, reliable connectivity enables real-time data access across everything from transportation and manufacturing to public services and emergency response. This leads to better decisions, faster action, and smarter resource management.

The technology also makes it possible to monitor environments, control energy usage, and optimize logistics – whether in a factory, hospital, or municipal operation. Through remote management, automation, and secure network capabilities, more services can be delivered where they're needed most, even from a distance. Advanced 5G opens new possibilities for a digital Sweden that's resilient, flexible, and ready for the future.

Next-generation 5G for greater sustainability

With advanced 5G, or 5G SA, we gain next-generation 5G capabilities that can be tailored to real-world needs. Fast, secure, and energy-efficient. This makes it possible to connect vehicles, machinery, and critical infrastructure in real time, reducing emissions, saving energy, and minimizing unnecessary travel. The technology can be used to remotely control transport systems, optimize urban traffic flows, and monitor forests or infrastructure with drones instead of helicopters. The result is smarter connectivity that delivers tangible environmental benefits and supports a more sustainable society.

Advanced 5G in detail

Guaranteed low latency and high reliability

Advanced 5G delivers lower latency and guaranteed network quality – something standard 5G can't offer, since it still relies on the 4G core. This opens the door to:

  • Time-critical industrial applications, such as robot control

  • Remote-controlled vehicles and drones

  • Healthcare applications, including remote surgery

Dedicated networks for different business needs with network slicing

Advanced 5G enables network slicing, allowing us to offer dedicated virtual networks tailored to specific use cases, with guaranteed service levels. This is ideal for:

  • Manufacturing processes that require high availability and security

  • Event deployments with temporary needs for very high capacity

  • Transportation and logistics applications that require prioritized communication

Complete Mobile Edge Computing integration (MEC)

With advanced 5G, you can leverage local data processing at the network edge. This reduces latency, improves data security, and provides better control. Ideal for:

  • Real-time analytics in factories and process environments

  • AR/VR in retail and training environments

  • IoT applications for smart cities

Future-proof without 4G dependencies

Advanced 5G differs from standard 5G by operating independently of the 4G network. This makes the network more scalable, faster to develop, and easier to integrate with next-generation applications and technologies. It enables use cases including:

  • AI-powered automation

  • Self-sustaining IoT systems

  • Real-time energy optimization

Greater security and privacy

Advanced 5G is built on an entirely new architecture, such as Service-Based Architecture, designed from the ground up for more sophisticated security capabilities. This makes it easier to design systems with:

  • End-to-end encryption

  • Isolation between network slices

  • Integration with private networks (Private 5G)
