Telia DNS

DNS is a name management service that acts as the internet's phone book. It translates domain names into IP addresses that browsers use to load web resources. Every device connected to the internet has a unique IP address that other devices use to locate it. DNS servers eliminate the need for people to memorize IP addresses like 192.168.1.1 (in IPv4) or more complex alphanumeric IP addresses like 2400:cb00:2048:1::c629:d7a2 (in IPv6).

Telia DNS Standard/DNS hosting gives you a dedicated zone for your domain name. This allows visitors to find your website using a simple domain name instead of having to remember an IP address.

It also makes it easy to manage DNS records for your domain.

Records are fundamental building blocks that provide specific information and data about a domain or subdomain.

Each DNS record serves a specific purpose. Managing DNS records lets you edit, add, or remove entries for your domain – controlling what people see when they visit your domain and enabling connections to third-party services like email providers.

Reverse DNS is a technique used to identify the domain name associated with a specific IP address. This is done by making a DNS query for the IP address. It's the opposite of the more commonly used forward lookup, where the DNS system is queried to return an IP address.

This service is relevant if you have your own public IP addresses that you want to advertise with your domain name.

Secondary DNS (slave) is a technology that copies DNS data from a primary DNS server (master) to one or more additional DNS servers. If the primary server goes down, the other servers can continue responding to DNS queries. Together, they create redundancy.

If you have your own primary DNS, you can add redundancy with Telia's secondary DNS service.

The DNS manager in the control panel is a tool that lets you manage DNS records for your domain. You can use the DNS manager to handle the most common DNS record types, including A records, PTR records, and MX records.

If you've been assigned public IP addresses by Telia and want your reverse zone delegated to your own name servers, contact us by email.

Include your company name, phone number, and the installation ID for your internet access, along with the relevant name servers and assigned IP addresses with prefix.

If you've been assigned a smaller subnet, your configuration must follow this example:

You've been assigned a network with 128 addresses. For example: 192.36.73.0 – 192.36.73.128. The subdomain will then be 0-25.73.36.192.in-addr.arpa, where 0 is the starting address in the assigned address space (0–127) and 25 is the number of ones in the subnet mask.

You should create a zone file for 0-25.73.36.192.in-addr.arpa and add NS and PTR records as follows:

0-25.73.36.192.in-addr.arpa. NS dns.doman.se.

0-25.73.36.192.in-addr.arpa. NS dnsX.telia.com.

1.0-25.73.36.192.in-addr.arpa. PTR host1.domain.se.

2.0-25.73.36.192.in-addr.arpa. PTR host2.domain.se.

3.0-25.73.36.192.in-addr.arpa. PTR host3.domain.se.

4.0-25.73.36.192.in-addr.arpa. PTR host4.domain.se.

– and so on

DNSSec is a security feature that strengthens DNS authentication using digital signatures based on public key cryptography. Each DNS zone has a public/private key pair. DNSSec protects the internet from DNS data manipulation and prevents DNS responses from being forged in transit.

DNSSec offers several key benefits:

• Authentication: DNSSec uses digital signatures to verify that DNS data hasn't been tampered with by a third party.

• Data integrity: DNSSec protects DNS data from being altered in transit.

• Trust: DNSSec increases trust in websites that use the technology by protecting against DNS spoofing and other DNS attacks.

• Security: DNSSec protects against man-in-the-middle attacks and prevents DNS responses from being forged in transit.
