The machine that produces cardboard twice as fast as Usain Bolt can run
In Obbola, SCA operates a new machine that produces packaging board at a speed of 1, 400 meters per minute. That's equivalent to 80 kilometers per hour, or twice as fast as world-class sprinter Usain Bolt. Each year, the machine produces 725, 000 tons of kraftliner used in recyclable packaging around the world. You may not realize that SCA and the forest industry are among the most technologically advanced sectors globally. As SCA builds the world's largest paper mill in Obbola, machines and vehicles are connected through a network from Telia. This enables machines to communicate with each other from forest to factory.

Industrial environments make reliable connectivity challenging. The use of connected machinery and fully automated vehicles demands exceptional performance. You need strong signal strength and highly reliable connectivity with consistent coverage everywhere.
At the new paper mill in Obbola, SCA has chosen to invest in a private dedicated mobile network as a service from Telia. Mobile networks with 4G and 5G have better technical capabilities to handle robust connectivity with very high availability in industrial environments where stable coverage across large areas is often essential.
The private network launches with 4G but is prepared for upgrade to 5G. Locally placed antennas and transmitters ensure that connected machinery and vehicles can send and receive the large volumes of data required without interference, in a network with very high availability and reliable network capacity.

New technology should make us more efficient and increase productivity, and we only make IT investments that we can justify financially.
How SCA benefits from the new network
With faster and more stable connectivity, SCA gains better visibility into inventory and can plan production more efficiently. A private dedicated network also makes it possible to increase production volume further thanks to better and more connected devices, while reducing the risk of production interruptions.
New digital applications enable us to guarantee high production availability. We can monitor operations and be proactive with maintenance, and identify issues before they lead to downtime. We're increasingly doing this via mobile devices. Staff can then respond faster to new information. The network Telia is building guarantees high availability for these devices and other connected systems in the factory.
At SCA's paper mill in Obbola, the new network will be used to connect machinery and vehicles, and ensure that data traffic quality between mobile devices and maintenance systems at the facility is sufficiently high.
They've chosen the Telia Private Dedicated Mobile Network with the Local Breakout option to guarantee that all data produced at the facility remains in the customer's environment. Another advantage is that latency in the mobile network is minimized, which enables the use of more advanced digital applications.
Once the upgrade is complete, the mobile applications will contribute to achieving the production target of 725, 000 tons of kraftliner per year. Kraftliner is a paper product primarily used to manufacture corrugated packaging. Most of the factory's machinery and equipment will be connected and monitored digitally.
Mobile private network applications deliver high availability and can therefore be an important enabler for use cases where connected devices move across large areas.
Telia's offering includes:
4G & 5G dedicated mobile network
High reliability through diverse and/or redundant design
Service Level Agreement (SLA) for end-to-end services
High security with 3GPP standardized services
Local BreakOut – data stays local at the customer site
24/7/365 service monitoring with response
Telia's fixed networks are used by multiple industries
Mobile dedicated private networks enable several new value-creating use cases for logistics, mining, or pulp and paper industries. For example, it becomes possible to connect autonomous vehicles in a mine, or remotely control forklifts at an industrial site.
With Telia's 5G network, ten times as much data can be transmitted through mobile networks – instantly and securely. When latency is as minimal as one millisecond, it opens up tremendous possibilities.
