Telia mobile network powers wireless sensors at Södra Cell

One of Södra's goals is uninterrupted production processes that ensure competitiveness and reliable deliveries. To minimize errors and downtime, the company has deployed more than 1, 000 Airius 4G mobile vibration sensors with temperature monitoring. These measurement units require stable, high-speed connectivity. Södra has chosen a private dedicated mobile network delivered by Telia for transmitting measurement data.

Södra recognized early on the value of connected sensors and has worked closely with manufacturer SPM to drive the development of Airius sensors that measure temperature and vibration in factory fans and pumps. Earlier sensor versions connected via WiFi, but data is now transmitted using Telia LTE-M (4G). This ensures reliable, stable connectivity even in hard-to-reach locations and eliminates the need for routers.

Following a successful initial deployment that has already saved money by preventing production downtime, forestry group Södra is now investing in additional wireless Airius LTE-M vibration sensors for its pulp mills in Mönsterås, Mörrum, and Värö. The IoT sensors transmit vibration and temperature data over Telia's 4G network.

Reduced production downtime through automated monitoring

The connected vibration monitors have already proven their value by enabling preventive maintenance and service before machines break down and cause production stoppages.

Data from automated monitoring also gives Södra's technicians more time and better information for improving and optimizing their machinery. That's why IoT sensors will be introduced in more areas across production.

This gives us entirely new opportunities to predict bearing problems in our rotating equipment and maintain high operational reliability. At the same time, it's been interesting and educational to develop this new technology together with SPM and telecom operator Telia.
