Bus operator connects for sustainable public transport and happier passengers

Public transportation is the heart of a modern society. And to do the job right, it needs to be sustainable and smart. In Finland, public transport operator Pohjolan Liikenne is leading the way with Telia through the electrification and digitalization of buses.

Pohjolan Liikenne is one of Finland's largest bus operators. Its fleet of approximately 300 buses is equipped and connected with Telia Smart Public Transport. Through Telia IoT Edge, an onboard computer and gateway, digital services enable cost and emissions reductions while improving the experience for drivers and passengers. Real-time data from the vehicles supports immediate operational decisions and long-term planning.

"The information from Telia's system helps us make better decisions across many areas," says Pohjolan Liikenne CEO Janne Hattula. "The data we collect daily gives us insights into services and driver behavior. These insights allow us to become more energy-efficient, operate more safely, and increase customer satisfaction."

Digital services enable sustainable public transport

Pohjolan Liikenne uses several Telia services in daily operations. With onboard climate control, the company can schedule automatic temperature checks on buses to avoid unnecessary heating or cooling and ensure comfort before buses leave the depot.

Eco-driving gives drivers real-time feedback on their driving style so they can adjust to more sustainable habits, enabling more cost-effective and sustainable operations. Automatic passenger counting provides Pohjolan Liikenne and transport authorities with insights into travel demand based on data about when and where people board and exit. This enables them to adjust and plan public transport to match passenger needs.

Pohjolan Liikenne's vision is to be the "greenest" and most attractive public transport operator in Finland.

"Environmentally friendly transport is our top priority," says Janne. "Even though we're in the bus business, it's ultimately about people. We need to create new ways of working with our drivers and within our organization. Telia is helping us move forward."

Safe and efficient public transport fleet

Other features Pohjolan Liikenne uses from Telia's public transport portfolio include onboard camera surveillance for increased safety and vehicle health monitoring, which continuously checks vehicle condition. Together, Telia Smart Public Transport gives Pohjolan Liikenne a complete package of digital services for continuous operational improvement.

"The biggest advantage of our partnership with Telia is that it includes all elements related to bus operations. This helps us plan for the future and develop new capabilities that make us more competitive," says Janne Hattula.

The partnership with Telia began in 2019 and continues to play a key role in Pohjolan Liikenne's journey toward sustainable operations and satisfied passengers.

"A model where you can work broadly with one partner is valuable, and for that you need a partner who can be flexible and understand your needs as a customer. Telia gives us exactly that," says Janne Hattula.
